What is ECO?
ECO stands for Energy Company Obligation. It is a government energy efficiency scheme in the UK that obligates larger energy suppliers to help improve the energy efficiency of households, particularly those considered vulnerable or on lower incomes. ECO aims to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty by funding energy efficiency measures such as insulation and heating upgrades.
What’s included in ECO4?
Households eligible for the scheme may benefit from various upgrades, including improved or new insulation, upgraded heating systems, installation of air source heat pumps, and potentially, solar panel installation where appropriate.
Who is eligible for the ECO scheme?
- Homeowners with EPC ratings of D, E, F, or G and receiving benefits might qualify for the ECO scheme.
- The ECO scheme offers support for energy-efficient improvements to reduce energy bills and carbon emissions.
- Renters with EPC ratings of E, F, or G and receiving benefits could be eligible for upgrades under the ECO4 scheme with landlord permission.
- The ECO4 scheme includes improvements like insulation and heating systems.
- Check your EPC rating on the BlueClimate site in Scotland or the GOV UK website in England and Wales.
- These schemes help improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, and save on energy bills.

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)
Save thousands with insulation funding by upgrading your cavity wall or loft insulation. Check your eligibility in just 30 seconds. Homeowners or private renters can save on energy costs with free* cavity wall insulation through GBIS, potentially saving £235 per year for a semi-detached house (eligibility criteria apply).
Most home heat is lost through the walls. Modern insulation, such as EPS bonded beads, can lower bills, improve comfort, and reduce condensation. Most homes built since the 1920s have cavity walls suitable for this insulation.
Older loft insulation often compresses and becomes less effective. Topping up to 270mm can vastly improve efficiency and comfort. Modern loft insulation is no longer itchy.

Apply For Eco
The first step is to complete the ECO4 application to make sure you can receive support through the ECO4 scheme.
We will contact you
If you’re eligible for the scheme, one of our partner installation teams will contact you to explain everything. We’ll always start with a survey, which can be done online or in-person.
Your Home survey
The survey results confirm your eligibility for ECO4 funding for energy-efficient home improvements. Our team may discuss options to improve your home’s energy performance according to ECO4 guidelines.
Booking the installation
Once you’re happy with the proposed upgrades, you can schedule a date with our installation partners. We’ll provide details about the upgrades and the fitting process.

Frequently asked questions
Under ECO, energy suppliers must promote measures that improve the ability
of low-income, fuel-poor, and vulnerable households to heat their homes.
Implementing these measures should result in reduced energy usage by
installing insulation.
The ECO scheme supports energy efficiency upgrades in the homes of those
considered to be in fuel poverty – both home owners and tenants.
Your property will need to be assessed to understand which specific
improvements would most benefit it. You must own your own home or have
permission from your landlord, including a social housing provider or
management company.
It is up to each energy supplier to determine which energy efficiency upgrades
will be funded. We'll work with the installers to understand which
improvements will benefit your property and how to fund them.
Any additional work to your home outside of the installation of energy-saving
recommendations from the survey will be at your expense, and we’ll let you
know before you agree to proceed.
